We price every job after we see the tree. Here’s what the price guides say.

How much does tree service cost in Memphis?

Most tree removals cost between about $200 and $2,000, according to published price guides. HomeBlue’s Memphis guide puts a typical job at about $1,000. Those are guide numbers, not our prices. The table at the top of the page has the range for each service.

Five things move the price most: how big the tree is, how easy it is to reach, what is under it, the cleanup and the stump. A big tree takes more cuts and more time. If the truck can’t get close, the crew carries every piece farther. Power lines and buildings under the tree slow the work, because each piece has to be lowered on ropes or lifted out by a crane. Hauling the debris away is its own job, and stump grinding is usually its own line on the quote.

For the detail, read what tree removal costs and what stump grinding costs. Both pages show where each figure comes from.

What should you do first if a tree is down?

Stay away from any line on the ground and call MLGW at (901) 528-4465. If anyone is hurt, call 911.

Nothing else comes first. A wire on the ground can be live even if the power looks out, and a tree touching a line can carry power too. Don’t touch the tree or try to cut it. When everyone is safe and the power company has dealt with the lines, call us at (901) 389-2360 and we’ll tell you what to do next about the tree.

Who does the work?

The 18 Primos crew does the work. Our climbers go up the tree and take it down in sections, and a crane is used when a tree is too big or too close to a house. The same crew clears the debris and rakes up when the cutting is done.

Our own team answers the phone, so you talk to the people who plan the job. If you are comparing tree services, how to hire a tree service shows what to ask for and what to watch out for.

What should you expect when you hire a tree service in Memphis?

Expect four things, in this order: a walk through and a written estimate, the work day, the cleanup, and payment. That’s how any good tree service should work, and it’s how we work.

  1. Walk through and written estimateWe look at the tree, how we’ll get to it and what is under it. Estimates are free. Ask what the estimate covers and get it in writing.
  2. Work dayClimbers go up and bring the tree down in controlled sections. When a tree is too big or too close to the house, a crane lifts the pieces out.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Memphis?

Most house lots in Memphis don’t need a permit to take down a tree. In Memphis and unincorporated Shelby County, the tree rule works through a notice to the planning office, aimed at trees 10 inches wide or wider on lots that are not exempt. The county form exempts a residential lot of 10 acres or less with a house on it that people use as a home. That fits most houses in the city.

The rules matter more for vacant land, big parcels and building projects. Trees in the street are handled by the city, and a tree touching a power line is a job for MLGW, so don’t cut it. Before you cut a large tree, ask the planning office at (901) 576-6619. The full answer is on tree removal permits in Memphis.

How can you tell if a tree is dead or dying?

A dead tree is a tree whose trunk and branches no longer carry water and nutrients. Three signs to look for: no leaves in summer while the trees around it are green, bark falling off in patches, and dead branches at the top that never leaf out. One sign is a reason to look closer. Two or three together usually mean real trouble. See signs of a dead tree for the full list.

Which trees come down most often in Memphis yards?

On our tree removal page, the list of trees that come down most often starts with an oak, the water oak. Water oak is short lived for an oak, so it often wears out sooner than other oaks. Bradford pear and silver maple are on that list too. Read oak tree removal in Memphis for oak problems and when to prune, save or remove.
