Tree work in Bartlett

Bartlett is a city of about 57,000 people on the northeast edge of Memphis, and it takes its trees seriously. It has been a Tree City USA for 18 years, its official city tree is the cherrybark oak, and Blue Lagoon Park holds a certified arboretum.

Most Bartlett neighborhoods, from Easthill and Rivercrest to Sugartree and the streets off Stage Road, were built with oaks, maples, and pines that are now big enough to reach roofs and fences. Fenced backyards and narrow gates are the norm, so a lot of Bartlett tree work is done by climbers with ropes, with a crane brought in for the big trees over a house.

Bartlett also gets hit hard by storms. In the February 2022 ice storm, MLGW’s own report shows about 90 percent of Bartlett customers lost power, the highest share of any city it serves. When the June 2023 windstorm hit, Bartlett was named among the hardest hit areas.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Bartlett?

For a normal home lot, Bartlett’s code does not list a permit for cutting a tree in your yard. The city’s tree rules are aimed at land clearing and development. A permit is required for grading, or for removing 15 percent or more of the live trees 6 inches and wider (measured 5 feet off the ground). Building on an individual single-family homesite is exempt from that rule. Each tree removed over the limit counts as a separate offense.

The code also lets the city require owners to remove dead, diseased, or damaged trees that threaten the street or public property. If you have a dead tree near the road, it is better to deal with it before the city sends a letter.

New developments in Bartlett have their own tree planting requirements in the zoning code.

Limb and debris pickup in Bartlett

Bartlett has some of the most generous yard waste pickup in the area. The city collects up to 12 cubic yards per home each week, roughly a pile 13 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 5 feet high. No single piece can be longer than 8 feet or thicker than 2 feet. If a pile goes over the limit, you get 5 business days to clear the extra, and a city special pickup costs $400 a truckload.

Here is the part that matters when you hire someone: if a contractor’s work makes more than 12 cubic yards, the contractor has to haul it away, not the city. A full tree removal almost always goes over that, so our price includes hauling. Keep any pile away from mailboxes, hydrants, and utility poles, and out of the street and drains.

Power lines and digging in Bartlett

Bartlett is on MLGW. MLGW trims around its lines on a three year cycle and will remove a dead or diseased tree it sees as a hazard to its lines, with the owner’s written consent. It does not remove trees for touching the service drop to your house. We handle those. Tennessee 811 needs at least three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 351-1111.

Storms and trees in Bartlett

Bartlett’s mature oaks and pines take a beating in Mid-South storms. On April 30, 2017, straight-line winds uprooted big oaks along Broadway Street and in the Easthill subdivision. The February 2022 ice storm hit Bartlett harder than any other city MLGW serves, with about 90 percent of customers losing power. And in the June 2023 windstorm, with gusts of 70 to 90 mph, Bartlett was among the hardest hit areas along with Millington, Cordova, Raleigh, and Frayser.

Since our shop is in Raleigh, Bartlett is one of the fastest places for us to reach after a storm.
