Tree removal cost is the price a tree crew charges to cut down and haul away a tree. Published guides put most jobs between about $200 and $2,000. HomeBlue, which writes a Memphis page, says a typical job is around $1,000, with a range of $400 to $1,700.

Those are figures from guides, not our prices. We price each tree after we see it. Size, access, power lines, cleanup, stump work and emergency timing move the number most.

What changes the price of tree removal?

Tree service in Memphis crews look at seven things before they put a price on a job.

  • Tree height and trunk width
  • Access for the truck
  • Power lines near the tree
  • A dead or storm damaged tree
  • Whether a crane is needed
  • Hauling
  • Stump grinding

1. Tree size

Bigger trees take more cuts, more time and bigger gear. HomeAdvisor reports about $8 to $15 per foot, and LawnStarter reports $10 to $14 per foot. NerdWallet says a small tree takes a few hours and a very large one can take up to two full working days.

2. Access

If the truck cannot get close, crew members carry or drag every piece farther. HomeAdvisor says hard-to-reach sites can add 25% to 50%.

3. Power lines and buildings

A roof, pool or wire under the tree slows the work, because each piece has to be lowered on ropes or lifted by a crane. NerdWallet says trees close to structures or lines can cost 25% to 50% more. HomeAdvisor says a crane on an 80 foot tree adds about $500. Crane tree removal is something we do for big trees over homes.

4. Cleanup and hauling

Cutting the tree down is one job and clearing it away is another. HomeAdvisor lists debris hauling at $50 to $100 and chipping at $75 to $125 an hour. LawnStarter lists hauling at $50 to $90 and chipping at $65 to $125. Stump grinding is usually its own line too.

The Memphis guide and the national guides do not match exactly. They use different data, and they do not all say what is included, so we show every range instead of one number. For stumps, see the stump grinding cost page.

How does tree height change the price?

Taller trees cost more. Small trees cost the least and very large trees cost the most. The two guides split the heights differently, so the rows are close but not identical.

HeightHomeBlue (Memphis)HomeAdvisor (national)
20 ft$220 to $410$200 to $300
30 ft$320 to $620$240 to $450
40 ft$430 to $830$420 to $700
50 ft$540 to $1,040$500 to $1,000
60 ft$650 to $1,240$800 to $1,500 (60 to 80 ft)
80 ft$870 to $1,660$1,000 to $2,000 (80 to 100 ft)

Both guides call these general ranges. A 60 foot tree in an open yard and one leaning over a house are not the same job.

How do estimates work?

At 18 Primos, an estimate is free. A crew member looks at the tree, the space around it and the way in, then gives you a written price. We do not price a tree by phone alone.

Get two or three written quotes and compare what each one covers, not just the total. Ask every company:

  • Is hauling the wood and brush in the price?
  • Is the stump in the price, or extra?
  • Do you want to keep any wood?
  • Who fixes lawn or fence damage?
  • Is a crane in the price if one is needed?
  • When do you pay, and how?

NerdWallet says to get an estimate that clearly states whether stump work is included. For more on picking a crew, see how to hire a tree service.

How do I read a tree removal quote?

Read it as a list of jobs, each with its own line. A clear quote names the tree or trees, says where they are, and lists what the crew will do and what it will not.

The tree
Which tree, where it stands, and how big it is
The work
Cut down only, or cut down and haul away
The extras
Stump grinding, chipping, firewood, crane
The damage terms
What happens if a lawn, fence or sprinkler is hurt
The payment terms
When money is due, and what the final price depends on

If a line is missing, ask about it.

Does insurance pay for tree removal?

Sometimes, but not always. Insurers may cover removal when a tree damages a covered building, and probably will not when a tree falls and hits nothing. Your own policy and your insurer have the final say.

The Oklahoma Insurance Department says removal of a tree or limb can be covered when it damages a structure. USAA says removal probably will not be covered if the tree falls without hitting a covered structure on your property, and that a rotted or poorly kept tree may lead to a denied claim. USAA also suggests confirming coverage with your insurer before you spend money. Insurance is a question for your agent, not for a tree crew. If a tree is already on your house, our tree on house page lists the first steps.

What makes a removal cost more?

Five things push a price up the most. HomeBlue’s Memphis page names the same ones.

  • Power lines near the tree, which slow every cut.
  • Tight access, so the crew works farther from the truck.
  • A dead or storm damaged tree, which may be unsafe to climb.
  • A crane, which adds rental and operator costs.
  • A rush job, since HomeBlue says emergency rates may be higher.

HomeAdvisor adds species and tree condition, such as a heavy lean or weak branches.

What makes a removal cost less?

A small tree, a clear way in, and no need for a crane or bucket truck all help. HomeBlue also lists a tree that is already down and not on a structure, and a request made in the off season.

Ask what you can do before the visit, such as clearing a path or moving cars. Whether that changes the price is up to each company.

Does a storm change the price?

Yes, emergency work usually costs more. HomeAdvisor says emergency removal can reach $5,000. NerdWallet says urgent removal typically costs more than a planned job, and HomeBlue says emergency rates may be higher.

After a storm, take photos, stay clear of wires and ask for the price in writing before work starts. For the full picture, read about emergency tree service in Memphis or the first steps after storm damage.

Is it cheaper to remove the tree or leave it?

Leaving a healthy tree costs nothing today, and it is the lowest-cost choice when the tree is fine. A tree that is dead, leaning or cracked near a house is a different question, and a visit will tell you which one you have.

There are three choices. Remove it now and pay once. Trim it, which HomeBlue prices at $180 to $230 an hour for a three person crew, and which only helps if the tree is sound. Or leave it and watch it. If you are not sure, look at the signs of a dead tree. Then ask for an estimate on tree removal in Memphis and on trimming, and compare the two.

What do people also ask about removal costs?

How much does tree removal cost in Memphis?

A Memphis guide from HomeBlue puts a typical removal around $1,000, with a range of $400 to $1,700 depending on height and access. National guides run lower, from $200 to $2,000 for most jobs. Those are published figures, not our price. We give a firm written price after we see the tree.

Does the price include hauling and the stump?

It depends on the company. Published guides list stump work and hauling as extras, so a low quote may leave them out. Ask for each one by name and get the answer in writing before you say yes.

Is a tree removal estimate free?

Yes. Estimates from 18 Primos are free. Call (901) 389-2360 or send photos, and we will set up a visit to look at the tree.

Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
