Tree work in Olive Branch
Olive Branch is a city of about 40,000 in northeast DeSoto County, incorporated back in 1873. Its Old Towne district sits around Pigeon Roost Road, Depot Street, and Old Highway 78, and the city has grown fast along US 78, Goodman Road, and Germantown Road.
Many Olive Branch subdivisions were cut out of woods, which leaves big hardwoods and pines very close to newer houses. City Park alone covers 135 acres with fishing lakes and a nature trail, and plenty of homes back up to wooded land.
That makes Olive Branch a place where we do a lot of selective clearing: taking out the trees that are too close to a house or too far gone, and keeping the healthy ones.

Tree rules in Olive Branch
We did not find a tree removal permit for homeowners in Olive Branch. The city’s zoning ordinance requires a landscape plan with building permits, but it specifically excludes single-family and two-family homes.
For development, the landscape plan has to identify every existing tree 8 inches and wider and justify each one being removed, and trees that are kept earn credit toward landscape requirements. Planned commercial projects next to homes must leave existing trees in their buffer as no-disturb zones.
So for your own house, taking down a tree does not need a permit. If you are building, keep the good trees. They count.

Limb and debris pickup in Olive Branch
Olive Branch Public Works picks up one truckload or less of yard debris at no charge. Bigger piles, over 600 cubic feet, are invoiced. Cut limbs into 5 to 6 foot lengths, stack them all facing the same way, and keep the pile behind the curb and away from wires, mailboxes, and cars. Routes take about a week to cover the city, and leaves are collected December through February.
The city states plainly that it does not pick up after tree services. That is why our Olive Branch prices include hauling.

Power lines and digging in Olive Branch
Olive Branch is home to Northcentral Electric Cooperative, which serves about 34,000 members in DeSoto and nearby counties. Northcentral takes outage reports by phone at (662) 895-2151, not through social media. Some parts of Olive Branch are on Entergy Mississippi instead, at 1-800-968-8243. Mississippi 811 needs three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 227-6477.

Storms and trees in Olive Branch
Olive Branch was hit by two tornadoes in 2009. On June 12, one caused major damage to six homes. On July 30, an EF-2 destroyed at least six homes and badly damaged 15 more, and about 9,000 DeSoto County customers lost power.
Water is the other threat. In June 2019, a flash flood dropped 8.7 inches of rain overnight and flooded homes, including on Wellington Drive. Saturated ground plus a strong wind is exactly when big trees close to houses go over.
