Tree work in Hernando

Hernando is the DeSoto County seat, a city of about 17,000 along I-55, I-69, and US 51. Its downtown square around the DeSoto County Courthouse is lined with old trees, and the historic water tower nearby dates to the 1920s.

Around the square, older neighborhoods give way to subdivisions like Arbor Pointe, Hawks Landing, Heritage Oaks, Cane Creek, and Chickasaw Bluff Lakes, and to bigger country lots with hardwoods and pine stands. To the south, the Coldwater River is dammed to form Arkabutla Lake on the DeSoto and Tate County line.

Hernando cares about its trees. It was named a Tree City USA for nine years running as of 2020, and the mayor has spoken publicly about protecting the city’s canopy.

Tree rules in Hernando

We did not find a tree removal permit for home lots in Hernando’s zoning code. The code has bufferyard and landscaping rules for development, and site plan reviews consider how a project conserves natural resources, including trees.

So taking a dead or unwanted tree out of your yard should not need a permit. If you are clearing land for a build, plan to keep the good trees, because the city will look at it.

Limb and debris pickup in Hernando

Hernando’s brush pickup runs year round and covers the whole city in about a week. Limbs can be up to 6 inches across and 4 feet long, with piles no bigger than 5 by 5 by 10 feet, within 4 feet of the road, cut ends facing the curb, and out of the ditch. Vines, loose leaves, and root balls are not taken. Questions go to Public Works at (662) 429-9322.

The city will not pick up limbs that were cut by a commercial trimming service. When we work in Hernando, the debris leaves with us.
