Tree work in Cordova
Cordova covers a big stretch of eastern Shelby County, roughly from Whitten Road east to Pisgah Road, and from the Wolf River north to I-40. Most of it is inside the City of Memphis, with some unincorporated pockets. It includes part of Shelby Farms and the Shelby Farms Greenline.
Neighborhoods like Countrywood, Berryhill, Rockcreek, Rocky Point, and South Cordova were built through the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s. The trees planted then, especially Bradford pears, fast-growing pines, and oaks, are now big enough to cause trouble. Bradford pears in particular are known for brittle wood and weak branching, and older ones split badly in wind and ice.
Many Cordova lots back onto creeks or green space, which means tight access. Climbers with ropes do most of the work there, and our stump grinder fits through most backyard gates.

Tree rules in Cordova
Because most of Cordova is in Memphis, the Memphis and Shelby County tree ordinance applies, and it covers the unincorporated parts too. The ordinance covers trees 10 inches and wider and calls for a notice 10 to 45 working days before removal, but it exempts residential lots with a house on them that are ten acres or less. For a normal Cordova home, no notice is needed.
Clearing on vacant or larger land is different. Removing more than the ordinance allows calls for 4 replacement trees for each tree removed, or $2,000 per acre to a tree bank.
Trees in the street itself are the city’s job. Anything outside the street is up to the property owner.

Limb and debris pickup in Cordova
In the Memphis part of Cordova, city Solid Waste picks up yard waste and bulky piles. Tree debris has to be under 5 feet long and under 13 inches across. Piles must be 10 cubic yards or smaller, within 3 feet of the street, and away from mailboxes, cars, fences, and low limbs.
By city ordinance, tree trimmers and other yard contractors must remove all the waste their work creates. That is why our price includes hauling. If you live in an unincorporated part of Cordova, your trash service may be different, so check your own pickup rules.
Power lines and digging in Cordova
Cordova is on MLGW. MLGW trims around its lines every three years. It does not remove trees for touching the service drop to your house, and it handles anything on the main lines. Tennessee 811 needs at least three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 351-1111.

Storms and trees in Cordova
Cordova was named among the hardest hit areas in the June 2023 windstorm, when gusts of 70 to 90 mph knocked out power to 122,000 MLGW customers. It also took damage in the 2003 windstorm, the February 2022 ice storm, and the August 23, 2026 storm.
Tall pines and split-prone Bradford pears in small backyards are the trees most likely to land on a Cordova house. Taking them down or thinning them before storm season is cheaper than an emergency call.

In the Memphis part of Cordova, the city does not collect limbs over 13 inches across or 5 feet long, and contractors must remove their own debris. We haul it as part of the job.
