Tree work in Collierville

Collierville is a town of about 51,000 on the east side of Shelby County. Its historic Town Square is on the National Register and was named Parade magazine’s best Main Street in 2014. Around it, older streets give way to newer subdivisions along Poplar Avenue, Bill Morris Parkway, Houston Levee Road, and Byhalia Road, and the Schilling Farms area.

A lot of those newer neighborhoods were built around existing hardwoods. Twenty or thirty years later, those trees are crowding houses, fences, and pools. Along the Wolf River, the Robbins-Halle Nature Preserve protects nearly 100 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, and many lots near the river corridor are still heavily wooded.

Collierville has been a Tree City USA for 20 years.

Collierville tree and grading rules

In Collierville, tree removal is handled through the grading permit. A grading permit is needed when 15 percent or more of the trees 8 inches and wider on a site are removed. Residential lots of one acre or less are excluded from that rule, which goes back to a 1999 lawsuit settlement. Collierville updated its tree protection, grading, and landscaping code in 2021 under Ordinance 2020-11.

In practice, removing a tree or two from a typical subdivision lot under an acre does not trigger the grading permit. Bigger lots, clearing for additions or new builds, and commercial property are where the rules come in. Violations go to Town Court, so it is worth checking first. We will tell you if your job looks like it needs a permit.

Limb and debris pickup in Collierville

Collierville collects up to 10 cubic yards of yard waste a week for free. Limbs must be cut to 8 feet or shorter and stacked in one pile at the front property line, out of the street. Loads over the limit cost $225 each. Loose leaves are collected from November through February.

The key line in the town’s guidelines: Collierville does not remove debris from contractor tree cutting. When we take a tree down in Collierville, hauling the wood is part of our price.

Power lines and digging in Collierville

Collierville is on MLGW. MLGW trims its lines every three years and keeps 10 to 15 feet of clearance from its main lines, but it does not remove trees that only touch the service drop to your house. In the February 2022 ice storm, about 19 percent of Collierville customers lost power, less than most of Shelby County. Tennessee 811 needs at least three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 351-1111.

Storms and trees in Collierville

Collierville’s big hardwoods are exposed to the same storms that hit the rest of the county. The 2003 windstorm, the February 2022 ice storm, and the August 23, 2026 storm all brought down trees and power here. The 2026 storm left enough of the area dark that Collierville schools delayed opening.

Wooded lots near the Wolf River and big oaks left close to newer homes are the ones to watch before storm season.
