Tree work in Millington

Millington is a city of about 10,500 in northern Shelby County along US 51. It is home to Naval Support Activity Mid-South and the Millington Regional Jetport, and Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is just to the west.

Older Millington neighborhoods have mature shade trees, and the land outside town is a mix of newer homes, big lots, and woods. Big Creek runs through the area, and the low ground near it floods. Wet soil and shallow roots are a bad mix for big trees in a wind storm.

Tree rules in Millington

We did not find a tree removal permit in Millington’s municipal code for residential lots. For a dead, leaning, or unwanted tree on a home lot, a permit should not be needed. Development and commercial projects can have their own site plan and landscaping rules, so check with the city if you are clearing land for a build.

What Millington does spell out clearly is what happens to the debris, and that is worth knowing before you hire anyone.

Limb and debris pickup in Millington

Millington’s yard waste rules are clear: if you hire a contractor, the contractor must haul the limbs away within two weeks. The city only collects limbs you cut yourself, up to 6 feet long and 12 inches thick, or 4 feet long and 24 inches thick, and up to about 6 cubic yards a week. Piles go out before 7 a.m. on collection day, and leaving one out the wrong way can bring a fine of up to $50. Loose leaves are collected from November 1 to March 15.

We haul everything from our Millington jobs, so you never have a pile waiting on the curb.

Power lines and digging in Millington

Millington is on MLGW. MLGW trims around its lines every three years and handles trees on its main lines. Trees touching only the service line to your house are up to the owner. In the February 2022 ice storm, only about 9 percent of Millington customers lost power, far less than Bartlett or Lakeland. Tennessee 811 needs at least three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 351-1111.

Storms and trees in Millington

Millington was among the hardest hit areas in the June 2023 windstorm, when 70 to 90 mph gusts even overturned aircraft at the airport. On May 9, 2024, the National Weather Service found 70 to 80 mph winds had uprooted trees just north of Millington along the Shelby and Tipton County line.

Flooding is part of the story too. Big Creek’s flood on December 25, 1987 ran almost twice the 100-year flow, and a levee breach in May 2010 led to about 2,000 people being evacuated. Soaked ground is when big trees are most likely to tip over.
