Tree work in Atoka

Atoka is a town of about 10,000 in Tipton County, just over the Shelby County line along US 51. It has grown into a busy commuter town, with subdivisions built on former farmland and wooded lots around Atoka-Munford Avenue and Nancy Lane Park.

When those subdivisions went in, tree lines were often left standing at the backs of lots. A few years later, those trees are leaning over fences and new roofs, and dead pines and hardwoods at the edge of the woods become a real risk in a storm.

Atoka is in Tipton County, not Shelby, so some of the rules and the power company are different from Memphis.

Tree rules in Atoka

We did not find a tree removal permit for residential lots in Atoka’s town code. Removing a dead, leaning, or unwanted tree from a home lot should not need one. Because Atoka is outside Shelby County, the Memphis and Shelby County tree ordinance does not apply here.

New development and subdivision projects can have their own landscaping and site plan rules, so if you are clearing for a build, check with Atoka Town Hall at (901) 837-5300.

Limb and debris pickup in Atoka

Atoka’s town code says yard trimmings should be cut to no more than 5 feet long and 5 inches thick, tied in bundles up to 75 pounds and 2 feet across. The town may handle pickup differently today, so call Town Hall at (901) 837-5300 to confirm current rules.

Those limits are built for routine yard cleanup, not a whole tree. When we take down a tree in Atoka, we cut up and haul the wood and brush.

Power lines and digging in Atoka

Much of Atoka gets power from Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, which has an office in Atoka at 110 Wesley Reed Drive, (901) 837-1900. STEMC keeps 15 feet of clearance from its primary lines and 6 feet from service lines on a five year trimming cycle. If you need a tree removed near a line, call your local STEMC office. STEMC can drop the lines so a contractor can take the tree down safely. Some Atoka addresses are on MLGW instead, so check your bill. Tennessee 811 needs at least three working days notice before digging, and that includes stump grinding. Call 811 or (800) 351-1111.

Storms and trees in Atoka

Ice is a big threat in Tipton County. In the February 2022 winter storm, 108 trees fell across Tipton County and one person died. On March 31, 2023, Atoka was inside a tornado warning, and the confirmed EF-3 tornado that night started near Munford, just north of town.

Atoka itself has storm history going back a long way. A tornado on April 21, 1928 damaged the business district. Tree lines at the back of new lots are usually the first things to come down.
