Tree work in Southaven

Southaven is the biggest city in DeSoto County, with about 57,000 people right across the state line from Memphis. It was incorporated in 1980 and runs along I-55 from Stateline Road south past Goodman Road. It is home to Snowden Grove Park, the Landers Center, Southaven Towne Center, and Tanger Outlets.

Older neighborhoods like Carriage Hills, Colonial Hills, Greenbrook, and Heritage Hills have mature oaks, sweetgums, and pines that are now big enough to threaten roofs in a storm. Newer areas like Central Park, Castle Ridge, and the Highlands of North Creek have younger trees that need pruning to grow strong.

Horn Lake Creek runs through the west side of the city and has flooded into Southaven, as far as US 51 in 2014.

Southaven tree removal rules

Southaven has a real tree ordinance, in Chapter 11 of its zoning code, but it exempts most homeowners. Any residential lot one acre or smaller is exempt. So is an unplatted residential parcel of five acres or less with an occupied home, and trees damaged by acts of God, like storms.

Outside those exemptions, a notice of intent to remove trees goes to the Office of Development 14 to 45 days before the work. Development tree surveys must show hardwoods over 2 inches, and replacement trees must be at least 3.5 inches, generally at two for one. Fines for cutting without approval run from $100 for a small tree up to $20,000 for a tree 30 inches and wider.

For a normal Southaven home, you can remove a tree without a permit. For larger land or development, check first.

Limb and debris pickup in Southaven

Southaven is direct about tree service debris. The city will not collect trees or limbs that were cut, trimmed, or removed by a professional, third party, or contractor. The owner has to get that debris removed within seven days of the work being done.

That means if a tree service leaves the wood at your curb, it is your problem. Every Southaven job we do includes hauling the debris unless you ask to keep the wood.
