Tree work in Horn Lake

Horn Lake is a city of about 26,500 in northwest DeSoto County, along I-55, US 51, and Goodman Road. It is named for an oxbow lake about three miles west of town, an old bed of the Mississippi River. Latimer Lakes Park and Wooten Park are two of its main parks, and Elvis Presley’s former ranch is here too.

Neighborhoods like DeSoto Village, Kentwood, Holly Hills, Twin Lakes, Edenshire, and Churchwood Estates are full of yard trees that have grown big over the decades. Limbs over roofs and storm-damaged trees are the most common jobs here. Horn Lake Creek also floods, which keeps the ground soft along its path.

Tree rules in Horn Lake

We did not find a tree removal permit in Horn Lake’s zoning code for home lots. New development has bufferyard planting rules.

What Horn Lake does have is a nuisance rule. The code does not allow dead trees or dead tree limbs to pile up when they become a health, safety, or fire hazard. If you have a dead tree or a pile of old limbs, deal with it before it turns into a code issue.

Limb and debris pickup in Horn Lake

Horn Lake’s own pickup guidelines say limbs at the curb can be no longer than 4 feet and no bigger than 10 inches across. Grass and leaves must be bagged. Pickup runs Monday through Friday starting at 6 a.m. The city’s hauler lists slightly different limits, so 4 feet is the safe length to use.

The guidelines are clear that tree service companies or property owners are responsible for removing all trees cut by a hired tree service. The city will not haul them. We do.

Storms and trees in Horn Lake

On March 31, 2023, an EF-2 tornado with 130 mph winds tracked about 23 miles through DeSoto County and ended about three miles south-southeast of Horn Lake. Local news reported big trees down on homes and cars around Horn Lake Road and Scenic Lane, and a tree fell on a vehicle on Horn Lake Road north of Dean Road.

In July 2023, another storm dropped a large tree across Tulane Road south of Church Road. Big yard trees and soft ground near the creek are a risky combination here.
