Stump grinder working on a stump in a yard

Stump grinding cost is the price a crew charges to grind a stump below ground. Most guides we read show a few hundred dollars for one stump, with small ones under $100 and big, hard-to-reach ones well over $500. The spread is wide because no two stumps are alike.

The numbers on this page come from published guides, not from 18 Primos. They are typical figures, not a quote. We give a firm written price after we see your stump, and estimates are free.

What changes the price of stump grinding?

Four things set the price: how wide the stump is, how many stumps there are, what the roots and ground are like, and how easy it is to get a machine to the spot. If you want a crew to look at yours, here is a tree service in Memphis that does free estimates.

1. Stump diameter

Width is the main driver. Most guides price by the inch across the top, and HomeAdvisor, LawnStarter and Fixr all give $2 to $5 per inch. A bigger stump means more wood to grind and more time. Hardwoods such as oak, maple and walnut cost more. HomeAdvisor says up to 20% more, and LawnStarter says an extra $50 to $150 per stump. LawnStarter also notes that old, rotten stumps grind cheaper than fresh, solid ones.

2. Number of stumps

The first stump carries the setup cost. After that, each extra stump on the same visit is cheaper. We cover that in its own section below.

3. Roots and depth

A stump with big roots above ground, or one you want ground deeper, takes longer. Guides price root grinding by the hour: HomeAdvisor says $100 to $200 an hour, Fixr says $100 to $200, and LawnStarter says $103 to $198.

4. Access

A stump on a slope, behind a narrow gate or in a tight corner costs more. HomeAdvisor puts the extra at up to $50 an hour or a flat charge of up to $200. LawnStarter also says up to $50 more an hour.

How much does stump grinding cost by size?

Typical ranges run from about $40 for a small stump to a few hundred dollars for a big one, and the guides do not agree on every line. These are the ranges each source reports (read 1 Nov 2026). We show them side by side instead of picking one.

Hard casesUp to $1,020 for a large hardwood in difficult conditions (GoTreeQuotes); $30 to $1,600 overall (HomeAdvisor)Size, hardwood, access, roots

Why the gaps? The guides use different data and define “small” and “large” differently. The Memphis figure is a mix of jobs, so read it as a wide range, not a stump price. Want to see how we work? Read about stump grinding in Memphis.

What is left after grinding?

After grinding you have a pile of wood chips and a shallow hole where the stump was, with roots left underground. The roots rot slowly over the years. The grinder does not dig them out.

How deep the crew goes is a question to ask. One Memphis cost page lists 4 to 6 inches below the surface as typical. Cleanup is where quotes differ most. Fixr lists cleanup at $2 to $3 per inch and mulching at $150 to $400. HomeAdvisor lists debris removal at $50 to $200. So a low quote may leave the chips in a pile and a higher one may carry them off.

Before you book, ask what the quote includes: how deep the crew grinds, whether the chips are hauled or left, whether roots are ground, and what the minimum charge is.

Is it cheaper to grind a stump yourself?

Renting a grinder costs less than hiring a crew on paper, but once you add time and gear the gap shrinks. HomeAdvisor lists rentals at $100 to $300 a day against $200 to $500 for a pro. LawnStarter lists $178 to $364 a day, averaging $260, and says a DIY job can take one to three days. Fixr lists $100 to $200 for a half day and $200 to $350 for a full day.

LawnStarter adds that rental and safety gear can eat up the labor savings. GoTreeQuotes puts a small rented grinder at about $170 for four hours.

Call 811 before you grind. LawnStarter and Fixr both say to call so buried utility lines are marked first.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes, many companies have one. The guides put it around $100 to $150 for a single small stump. Fixr says many companies set a $100 minimum to cover travel and setup. HomeAdvisor says $100 to $150, LawnStarter says about $100, and GoTreeQuotes says about $115 for a small, easy stump under a foot wide, with some providers at about $95.

That means a very small stump can cost the same as a medium one. If you have a few stumps, group them into one visit so the minimum is paid once.

Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?

Yes, per stump. The first stump pays for getting the machine set up, and the ones after it cost less. HomeAdvisor shows $100 to $150 for the first stump and $40 to $75 for each extra. LawnStarter shows about $123 for the first and $37 to $70 for each extra. Fixr shows $80 to $150 for the first and $40 to $75 for each extra.

How does grinding compare with full removal in price?

Grinding costs less than full removal in every guide that gives both numbers. Full removal pulls out the stump and the main roots with heavy equipment, which costs more and tears up more of the yard. Grinding leaves the roots to rot.

Fixr
Grinding $150 to $300. Removal $200 to $700. For a medium stump, $75 to $150 to grind against $200 to $700 to remove.
LawnStarter
Grinding $131 to $438. Removal with heavy equipment $175 to $516.
GoTreeQuotes
Says grinding is cheaper than removal because removal needs excavation equipment and disturbs more of the yard. No removal price given.

If you plan to pour a slab or build right over the spot, ask about going deeper.

Does the cost change if the tree is removed too?

Yes, because the stump becomes a second line on the bill. The guides we read price the tree and the stump separately. HomeAdvisor lists tree removal at $200 to $2,000 and says that does not include stump grinding. Fixr puts tree removal plus stump grinding for a medium tree at $400 to $1,100.

Doing both on one visit can save a trip. Ask for the tree and the stump on separate lines so you can see each price. For the tree side of the bill, see what tree removal costs.
